Variations of Voodoo: A Tribute to D’Angelo.

It’s been twenty years since D’Angelo’s Voodoo, one of my #GOAT albums, dropped. I’ve played this album over a thousand times and still never tire of listening to it. It still sounds relevant and fresh. The by-product, of influencing artists who came after this album, was heard across the industry. It is still held in the highest regard.

DJ/Producer Amerigo Gazaway’s Variation’s Of Voodoo: A Tribute To D’Angelo, is inflected with his own live instrumentation and samples. He has managed to update the tracks, while maintaining the integrity of the original cuts (I pretty much love anything when a Wurlitzer is added to the mix). His spin on Spanish Joint, with its laid-back house style, or the gospel inspired take on Devil’s Pie, are refreshing.

For the most part, I tend to dislike it when my all-time greats are messed with. In this case however, Gazaway’s work has paid off. He gives a respectful head nod to the master, while putting his own beautiful spin on this landmark album, and artist. The reworked versions of Brown Sugar and Me And Those Dreamin’ Eyes Of Mine, off of the Brown Sugar album, are also notable.

If your musical tastes include R&B, Hip Hop, Neo Soul, Gospel or House music, I recommend giving this EP a spin!
