As one of the founding partners of Matteblacc, (Singapore’s ambassadors of quality Soul inspired music and DJ collective) he’s been highly sought after to warm up for and support some iconic acts from Talib Kweli, The Pharcyde, Fat Joe, Slum Village, Illa J, Arrested Development, Roy Ayers, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Jurassic 5, Bizarre Ride To The Pharcyde and Grand Master Flash to name a few. He is now back in Toronto after decades in Asia looking to bring his signature sound to a venue near you.

JNR credits his love for music to the weekly trips to the record shop at the local mall with his dad and siblings since he was 5. Older cousins with regular basement parties also had a huge part in inspiring him to DJ. In Singapore since 1998, he has been purveying his brand of soul-inspired feel-good music whenever he plays, whether it’s at a bar, daytime party, festival, club or a pop-up warehouse party. He can be found helming the decks each weekend at Lulu’s Lounge and occasionally at Tanjong Beach Club and Camp Kilo. In 2020, with the new norm of WFH and social distancing, JNR has been invited to host regular live stream shows for WORLD LIVING ROOM RADIO (every Wednesday) and Gotsoul Recordings x Turntables & Rhythm for Jojo Flores.

JNR’s latest project is being the co-founder to “She’s Afrique“, a new music and dance-centric event series curated for and by avid fans of all Afrocentric music, with the objective of bringing people together from all walks of life, with an all-inclusive social multicultural gathering promoting the rich culture of the dance and the infectious rhythms of the African diaspora (namely Afrobeat, Afrobeats, Afro House & Afro Tech).

JNR’s love for a diverse spectrum of music made him one of the most unique sounding DJs in Singapore. And on any given day of the week, you can hear him play a different sounding set. Sometimes it’s a straight boom-bap set for the heads, a mix of R&B, Tropical Vibes, Afrobeats, Soca and Dancehall strictly for the ladies, some boogie-funk and disco, to a late-night set of upfront and underground House and Techno. When performing as Just-Not-Right, his Housey alter-ego, his sound is a blend of Deep House, Detroit Techno, fused with Boogie, Philly Soul, and early Chicago House.

JNR shared the stage with the likes of Dennis Ferrer, Seth Troxler, Dubfire, Midnight Juggernauts, and Lindstrom at Zouk’s 10th Anniversary ZoukOut Festival. He also warmed up for the likes of Louis Vega, Osunlade, Jojo Flores, Joris Voorn, Tiefschwarz, Anja Schneider, Agoria, Paul Kalkbrenner, Fritz Kalkebrenner, Trus’me, Spirit Catcher, DAM-FUNK, Dimitri From Paris, Derrick Carter, Citizen. Other highlights thus far include playing at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival (Singapore) in 2009, 2010 & 2011, Malasimbo Festival 2019, Wonderfruit Festival 2018 & 2019 and Singapore Grand Prix (2018, 2017, 2011 & 2010).
